In a pre-emptive strike against electoral violence, the Nigeria Police Force has apprehended two suspected political thugs and confiscated firearms in Edo State, ahead of today's governorship election.
Force Public Relations Officer, Prince Olumuyiwa Adejobi, disclosed that the suspects, 43-year-old Edwin Obanor and 41-year-old Audu Tajudeen, a Peoples Democratic Party member from Ugbogbo quarters, Igara Akoko, Edo, were caught with locally fabricated pistols and a locally made gun.
According to Adejobi, "The Nigeria Police Force has made a significant breakthrough in its efforts to curb electoral violence in Edo State with the arrest of two political thugs..." The police operatives acted on a tip-off that some individuals had been armed to cause mayhem and instability during the election.
The arrests demonstrate the police's commitment to maintaining law and order and ensuring a peaceful electoral process. The suspects are currently in custody and will face the full weight of the law.
Meanwhile, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has also deployed operatives to tackle voter inducement in the election.
As Edo State residents head to the polls to elect a new governor, the police and other security agencies have reassured citizens of their dedication to protecting lives and property. Governor Godwin Obaseki will step down after completing his eight-year tenure.
