The Benue Police Command has described the recent deadly attack on Ayati community in Ukum Local Government Area as a desperate measure by bandits to resist ongoing security operations.
On August 8, 2024, at approximately 4:30 pm, a large group of armed bandits invaded Ayati village, shooting sporadically at community members.
According to SP Catherine Anene, spokesperson for the Benue Police Command, police officers responded swiftly, repelling the bandits.
However, the attack resulted in 15 fatalities, with two police officers among the dead. The bodies have been deposited at General Hospital Ukum, and an investigation is underway.
Commissioner of Police Hassan Yabanet visited Ayati for an on-the-spot assessment, commiserating with the families of the deceased and assuring them of his commitment to combating crime in the area. Anene stated, "The CP commended officers for their response and encouraged them to continue the operation, as additional teams have been deployed for wider coverage and enhanced engagement with bandits."
