The appearance of Nigerian artiste, Oludipe David, popularly known as Spyro, at the Harvesters International Gospel Center's Christmas carol session in Lagos State on Sunday has sparked a flurry of mixed reactions.
The church had extended invitations to various celebrities, including Daniel Effiong, Bisola Ayeola, Dorathy Bachor, Sharon Ooja, Uzor Arukwe, Adeh Gbolahan, and Kenneth Ophopho, to attend the event.
The decision to feature a secular musician at a religious event has drawn criticism from many quarters. Social media platforms have been abuzz with Nigerians questioning the appropriateness of inviting artists to perform in a place of worship.
This move by Pastor Bolaji Idowu, the lead preacher at Harvesters International Christian Centre, to include the artists in the event has sparked debates among individuals with varying opinions.
In reaction to the news, a social media user identified as @Marki tweeted, “It’s easy to spot fake pastors using Jesus name for their own selfish gains and bodily satisfaction.” Another user, @Walker, expressed his disapproval by tweeting, “This is the reason I don’t go to church.. how can churches be inviting worldly music into churches?”
However, not all reactions were negative. A Twitter user, @Obiasogu David, tweeted, “It’s lovely how Nigerian churches are coming up with innovative ways to “win souls.” Another user, @Enioluwa V.A, defended the church's decision by tweeting, “The most odorous opinions come from those who have never heard or listened to Pastor B teach. Spyro is a worker in the church, Skales participated in the last Bible Foundation course, what makes them less human to perform in the carol? Y’all have knotted bolts in your head.”
This incident follows the recent controversy surrounding the invitation of popular Fuji singer Pasuma and controversial Nigerian singer Portable, to perform at a Celestial Church in Lagos State. It's worth noting that Pastor Idowu recently made headlines after appearing alongside BBNaija star, Dorathy, in a skit by popular Nigerian skit maker, Mr. Macaroni.
