The Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) has slammed the Anambra government of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo for reportedly shutting down the state-owned National Light newspaper.
Dr Emeka Odogwu, Chairman of the NUJ Anambra Council, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Sunday in Enugu that the recent decision by the government was "an open ill-treatment" of journalists by the Soludo administration.
He claimed that the recent action exposed the state administration as faceless.
"We condemn the careless handling of the National Light newspaper issue and urge that the staff be absorbed into the Ministry of Information, as anything else would backfire."
"The NUJ is perplexed as to why Soludo's government was so preoccupied with hiring other workers but cannot allow fewer than 100 workers at National Light newspaper be, even if he does not want to hire more workers or turn around the organisation.
