Yusuf Madiko-Kadon, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Environment, expressed the government's commitment to tackling plastic waste. He announced that the newly formed task force would embark on an awareness campaign across the state, educating the public on proper plastic waste management and promoting recycling practices to preserve the environment.
To facilitate the recycling process, the State government has partnered with private sector firms. Madiko-Kadon mentioned that a plastic collection site had been established at Ungwan Rere in Lafia, where recycling companies could procure raw materials for production.
The Permanent Secretary emphasised that plastic waste recycling would be carried out through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, promoting collaboration between the government and private entities for a sustainable solution.
Envo Emmanuel-Okolo, Executive Director of the Beacon Youth Initiative (BYI), led the rally and highlighted the theme of the day: "Solution to Plastic Pollution." He stressed the urgent need for collective action to address the global impact of plastic pollution through sustainable measures.
Emmanuel-Okolo pointed out that Nigeria had already witnessed adverse climate conditions, with women, girls, and people with disabilities disproportionately affected by environmental hazards and health risks. The rally aimed to raise awareness and advocate for effective and sustainable actions from relevant authorities.
The BYI Director encouraged the use of sustainable alternatives to plastic and urged authorities to enforce strict regulations to mitigate the effects of plastic pollution in Nasarawa State. He emphasised that individual actions, such as rejecting plastic bags, could make a significant difference and contribute to an environmentally friendly way of life.
Emmanuel-Okolo commended the development of a National Action Plan on Gender and Climate Change for Nigeria and the local adoption of the drafted Nasarawa State Climate Change Policy. These initiatives demonstrate the commitment to addressing the intersection of gender, climate change, and environmental sustainability.
The rally served as a platform to amplify the voices of women, young people, and people with disabilities, urging authorities to prioritise their needs and take effective measures to protect the environment. It highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in combating plastic pollution and promoting a sustainable future for Nasarawa State and beyond.
