Yuguda emphasised that Tinubu's intention was to inform the nation about the reality of the situation, backed by the 2023 Appropriation Act and the Petroleum Industry Act of 2021, which clearly outline timelines for subsidy removal. He acknowledged the extensive discussions surrounding the cost of fuel subsidy and its implications for service delivery across all sectors.
The forum reiterated its stance that Tinubu's statement on fuel subsidy removal was justified. However, the subsequent threat of a strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) caught them by surprise. Nevertheless, Yuguda highlighted Tinubu's leadership capacity in addressing the union's threat and successfully resolving the situation, leading to the suspension of the planned strike.
Yuguda commended the NLC and TUC for returning to the negotiation table and reaching an agreement, emphasising that the earlier planned nationwide strike was unnecessary. He acknowledged the promises made by the government, led by former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, which include a potential new national minimum wage, palliatives, and a framework for the completion of refinery overhauls.
The APC Professionals Forum expressed trust in Tinubu's commitment to review workers' salaries, as he had hinted at it even before engaging in talks with labor unions regarding fuel subsidy removal. Yuguda emphasised that Tinubu's Renewed Hope agenda is built on his dedication to the people and that agreements made with the NLC, TUC, and the Nigerian populace will be upheld.
Yuguda highlighted Tinubu's hands-on approach to governance, citing his successful resolution of the health workers' strike, which coincided with his inauguration. Tinubu held direct talks with the leadership of the Joint Health Sectors Union (JOHESU) on the same day discussions were held regarding fuel subsidies.
The forum called on Nigerians from all walks of life to exercise patience and support Tinubu, even in the face of initial discomfort caused by the removal of fuel subsidies. They emphasised that Tinubu's administration is committed to implementing palliative measures to alleviate the impact of the policy, particularly for the poor and low-income earners. The APC Professionals Forum believes in Tinubu's promise-keeping nature and urged Nigerians to trust the process.
