The Nigerian musician, Seun Anikulapo Kuti, has been ordered to be immediately arrested by the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Usman Baba-Alkali, for assaulting a police officer.
The video of the incident has gone viral on social media, prompting the IGP to order a speedy and full investigation into the cause of the assault and prosecution of the suspect accordingly.
The spokesperson for Nigerian police, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, revealed this in a statement released on Saturday.
In the video, Mr Kuti was seen shouting “You dey mad?” as he slapped the police officer who was in uniform. The reason for the altercation between the two parties is yet to be ascertained by the press.
It is important to note that assaulting a police officer is a criminal offence punishable under the law. The IGP has repeatedly stated that the Nigerian Police Force will not condone any form of assault or attack on its officers and men in the discharge of their statutory duties.
In a similar incident last year, a viral video showed some police officers assaulting a young man, resulting in nationwide outrage and condemnation. The IGP at the time, Mohammed Adamu, ordered an investigation into the matter, and the officers involved were subsequently arrested and charged in court.
As a public figure, Seun Kuti's actions are expected to be exemplary, and his alleged assault on a police officer has generated widespread condemnation on social media. The Nigerian Police Force has also been under public scrutiny in recent times, with calls for police reform and an end to police brutality.
It is expected that the police will conduct a thorough investigation into the matter to ascertain the cause of the altercation and bring the perpetrator to justice.
The IGP's directive to arrest the suspect sends a strong message that no one is above the law, and law enforcement agencies are ready to ensure the safety and protection of all citizens.
Mr Kuti has not yet responded to calls and messages from the press seeking comments on the incident. The public will be eager to hear his side of the story and what led to the altercation with the police officer.
