The federal government on Wednesday approved the total of N23.33 billion for the surface maintenance of the third mainland bridge in Lagos state, as well as increasing the contract amount for the old Enugu-Anambra road project.
The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who the State House correspondents after this week's Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa said the 24-month repair would cover 7 miles, including intersections, ramps and critical connections.
He said the move agrees with the executive Order 11, signed by President Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) in April 2022, legally backing the country's national maintenance policy.
The announcement came just under two weeks after the Lagos state government pronounced it would mark 32 years rehabilitating old bridge to repair failed and chipped sections of asphalt and substructure.
But Fashola argued there would be no duplication of effort, the former Lagos state governor said the state's Public Works Corporation will focus on the functional structure of the bridge, such as B. the underwater piles, while the FG handles surface maintenance to treat potholes and restore missing guard rails. Work is primarily focused on the bridge's substructure, subsea piles, pile caps and replacement of expansion joints and bearings.
“These are maintenance activities critical to the bridge's structural integrity. What we are dealing with now is different. It's the riding surface and also the aesthetics. Some of the rails that were stolen. Some of the folds are misaligned with the pathways that take you on and off the bridge."
Fashola added that no extended closures are expected during the work.
Meanwhile, the council also approved a treaty amendment in Amount of N17.05 billion for the construction of the old Enugu-Onitsha Road, the current total of which is now N48.99 billion.
