The Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP) has released its annual Global Terrorism Index (GTI) report, which highlights the 20 deadliest terror groups in the world for the year 2022. According to the report, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) was responsible for 57 deaths in 2022, from 40 attacks with 16 persons injured, placing them in the 10th position among the top 20 deadliest terror groups.
The report stated that IPOB, designated as a terrorist group by the Nigerian government in 2017, recorded their deadliest year in 2022. The group is a separatist movement with many factions seeking a peaceful succession from Nigeria. However, many of their attacks have turned violent and deadly, resulting in increased concern and scrutiny.
Despite the overall decline in terrorism in Nigeria, the report revealed that half of all terrorism deaths in Nigeria in 2022 were civilians, with the military being the most targeted group. The report also noted that Borno State remains the hardest-hit region in Nigeria for terrorism, accounting for 60% of all terror-related deaths in 2022.
The Islamic State (IS) tops the list of the 20 deadliest terror groups in 2022, responsible for 1045 deaths, 410 attacks, and 644 injuries. The group's continued activities across the Middle East and North Africa region, as well as its expansion into other countries, have made it a major threat to global security.
The report underscores the need for continued efforts to address terrorism and its root causes, including poverty, political instability, and social exclusion. It also highlights the importance of strengthening law enforcement and security measures to prevent terrorist attacks and protect civilians.
