The human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), has claimed that the recently concluded 2023 presidential election in Nigeria was marred by result manipulations. Falana stated this in an interview on Channels TV’s Politics Today.
According to the lawyer, other factors that marred the election included insecurity, late arrival of materials, violence and thuggery. He noted that there were several reports of voter intimidation and suppression across the country, particularly in areas where opposition parties were strong.
Falana expressed disappointment with the conduct of the election, calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take responsibility for the challenges that marred the process.
He stated that while INEC had admitted to logistical and technological challenges, it was important for the electoral body to go back to the drawing table and fine-tune its strategy.
Falana noted that the manipulation of results was a major concern, as it undermines the credibility of the electoral process and erodes the trust of the people in the democratic system. He called on INEC to ensure that the voices of the people were heard and their votes counted.
The lawyer also expressed concern about the rising insecurity in the country, particularly in the north-eastern region, where Boko Haram insurgents continue to wreak havoc. He called on the government to take urgent measures to address the issue and ensure the safety of citizens.
Falana further noted that the late arrival of election materials and violence during the election were major factors that hindered the conduct of a free and fair election.
He urged the government to take steps to address the root causes of electoral violence and put in place measures to prevent a recurrence in future elections.
The lawyer also expressed disappointment with the rejection of the election results by opposition parties, noting that it was important for all parties to respect the outcome of the election and work together for the progress of the country.
He called on the government to take steps to address the concerns of the opposition parties and ensure that their grievances were addressed in a timely and effective manner.
Falana emphasized the need for a transparent and credible electoral process, noting that this was essential for the stability and progress of the country.
He called on INEC and other stakeholders to work together to address the challenges that marred the election and ensure that future elections were free, fair and credible.
The lawyer also urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and actively participate in the democratic process, noting that their voices and votes were crucial in shaping the future of the country.
Falana concluded by stating that it was important for all stakeholders to work together to address the challenges facing the country and build a better Nigeria for all.
