Anambra: Gunmen kill two vigilantes

Criminals with guns attacked an old building used by the police and vigilante services on Friday night in the Abagana community in the Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State. Two vigilante operatives were killed in the attack.

According to reports from people living in the area, the shooting started around 9 p.m. and lasted 45 minutes. During that time, the bandits allegedly shot and killed vigilantes, and stray bullets hit several people who live in the area.

An eyewitness who was hurt in the attack said it was unthinkable that the criminals would shoot vigilantes when they arrived, drive to Enugwukwu, and then come back and burn down the police station.

Also, it was said that the gunmen let the detainees out of the police facility and burned it down.

DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, who is in charge of public relations for the Anambra State Police Command, confirmed the event but said that only two vigilante operatives, not three, were killed by the bandits.

He also said that the police officers fought against the attackers, making them run away. The police spokesman also said that the bad guys only threw petrol bombs at the old building in the station, which did some damage. However, the fire was put out quickly by State Fire Service workers.

Mr Ikenga said that patrols have been stepped up in the area and throughout the state of Anambra.
