US police officers kill attacker in Indiana store

Late on Thursday, a man in the US state of Indiana opened fire on police inside a Walmart, prompting the police to shoot and kill him.

According to WFIE-TV, police in Evansville were called in response to a complaint of an active attacker at a store at about ten o'clock local time (03:30 GMT) on Friday.

Officer Anna Gray of the Evansville Police Department claims that when officers entered the building, the male suspect started shooting at them. Gray claims that they returned fire, killing the assailant.

No police officers were hurt during the event that we are aware of.

There was at least one other shooting victim who needed medical assistance.

Gray said there might be more victims and that the degree of their injuries wasn't known at the time.

The population of Evansville, Indiana, on the Ohio River and is located about 276 kilometres (172 miles) southwest of Indianapolis, is 116,000.

At a Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in Florida on Monday, gunshots resulted in one fatality and seven injuries.

Since the start of 2023, at least 33 mass shootings have taken place, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

According to the US-based organisation, there were 648 mass shootings last year.

President Joe Biden approved the first significant federal gun reform in three decades in June last year, following a spate of tragic shootings. It was a bipartisan compromise to pass the measure.

The plan represents the first serious effort by Congress to curtail gun violence since the 1993 expiration of the assault weapons restrictions.

Background checks were strengthened and funded, and a loophole that allowed certain people accused of domestic abuse to purchase firearms was closed.
