Gunmen kill three, raze Anambra council headquarters

On Thursday morning, armed persons assaulted the Ihiala Local Council Headquarters in Anambra State. They broke into the Local Government secretariat and set it on fire.

The gunmen assaulted the scene at around 1.30 a.m., firing shots and engaged the neighbourhood vigilante group in a firefight before eventually gaining access to the local council facilities, according to information from Prime 9ja Online.

When armed men invaded the council district, the administrative building was set on fire and completely destroyed.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the civil defence offices were all destroyed in the fire, along with the council's health department.

Witnesses report that the three hours of firing were intense and continuous.

In the course of the exchange, one gunman and two members of the Ihiala neighbourhood vigilante organisation were both murdered.

The Ihiala Police Division office had been invaded by the same armed individuals around two weeks before to the incident on Thursday.

The gunmen reportedly returned to the neighbouring town of Orlu in Imo state where they had first surfaced after carrying out their mission.

The attackers had already left by the time the Joint Task Force on Security arrived.

The attackers also attacked and set fire to the residences of the Deputy Speaker and the President General of the Osumoghu Community in the Nnewi South local government region.
