A Ugandan court mandated that a woman pay her ex-fiance 9.4 million shillings (about $2,550 or £2,060) as restitution for her refusal to marry him after four years of dating.
Fortunate Kyarikunda lied to Richard Tumwine, according to a ruling made on Thursday by Kanungu court magistrate Asanasio Mukobi.
The amount, according to Mukobi, was Tumwine's monetary recompense for the emotional harm he caused Kyarikunda by paying for his legal training and representation, the BBC reports.
Kyarikunda claimed that her parents were against the union because Tumwine was her elder for several years.
Due to the defendant's assertion that her parents barred her from marrying an older man, the court deemed her to be "unreasonable, a misrepresentation, and a fraud."
The magistrate stated that she "had every chance to refuse the Plaintiff's pleas for affection at the earliest stage possible and avoid interfering with his financial commitments."
The conclusion was erroneous since, unlike a marriage, an engagement should not have legal force, although it is unknown if Kyarikunda will appeal the ruling.
