The Supreme Court of Nigeria ruled on Friday in Abuja that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) primary election in Imo West, which produced Jones Onyerere as the party's candidate for the senate seat in the forthcoming February election for the National Assembly, was unlawful.
The primary election was declared unlawful by the Supreme Court because it was held in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, rather than Orlu, the location of Imo West's senatorial district. Orlu was intended to host the election.
The People's Democratic Party (PDP) violated Section 87 (9) of the Electoral Act by holding the primary election in a venue that was not permitted by law, according to Justice Emmanuel Agim's ruling on the appeal filed by Nnamdi Ezeani.
The Supreme Court decided that the People's Democratic Party (PDP) would not be permitted to participate in the election for senator the following month because it was unable to nominate a candidate within the given time.
