Mathew Edozieuno Nwankwo, the suspect, is accused of being a kidnapper for a vicious gang that terrorised the state under former Governor Willie Obiano.
Following the arrest of his gang members, Nwankwo allegedly fled the state. He just returned, presumably believing that the end of Willie Obiano's rule now allows him to live quietly.
Nwankwo was apprehended in Nteje, Oyi local government area, though, after the state Police Command received a tip on Tuesday morning.
When Nwankwo was on the run, his house and gang members’ homes in the Nteje and Umueri communities of the Anambra East local government area were demolished.
Mr Solomon Chibuzor Morah, aka Mmili, and Hyacinth Chibudu had their homes demolished as well, according to the leader of the demolition team, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr Joseph Agugoesi.
Agugoesi claims that the gang members were demanding and receiving large sums of money in ransom, claiming that the group had once demanded and received N70 million from one of their victims.
Mr Tochukwu Ikenga, the state’s police public relations officer, has confirmed the arrest and said the suspect is currently in police custody while additional investigations are conducted.
