The executive committee of the Federal Capital Territory has assured the citizens of their safety and insisted that sufficient security measures have been put in place to maintain peace and order in the region.
FCT spokesperson Muhammad Sule said in a statement on Monday that the committee provided the guarantee at its 12th meeting in the Gwarinpa I District of Abuja.
He revealed that FCT minister Muhammad Bello was represented at the meeting by Olusade Adesola, the FCT permanent secretary.
Bashir Mai-Borno, the FCT minister's chief of staff, as well as secretaries from mandate secretariats, among others, attended.
The statement claims that the government, along with security organizations, made the required preparations to protect people and property.
The statement added that the advisories issued by some diplomatic missions to their nationals living in Nigeria had generated tensions, fear, and panic among Abuja residents.
It said security agencies were combing the nooks and crannies of the FCT to fish out criminals and other people wishing to truncate the peace and tranquillity of the territory.
“Even before the issuance of the advisories (by the diplomatic missions), Nigerian security agencies have maintained and intensified surveillance within the FCT to ward off any security breach,“ the statement said.
It explained that the purchase and distribution of 60 operational vehicles fitted with state-of-the-art equipment to security agencies by the FCT administration would assist and enhance their performance.
Mr Bello had earlier convened an emergency meeting concerning the security alerts issued by some diplomatic missions in Abuja to their citizens.
“The meeting, however, urged residents to cooperate at all times with the security agencies by volunteering useful and timely information that will assist in nipping any form of criminality in the bud,“ the statement said.
The statement also mentioned that the FCT security committee implored residents to install CCTVs to complement the ongoing efforts by the government to tackle the prevailing security challenges in the country in line with National Security Council’s advice.
