Superstar singer and songwriter Taylor Swift won every award she was nominated for at the American Music Awards on Sunday.
With her 40th AMA win, Swift broke the previous record for most wins at the AMAs, which receive more votes than any other awards event in the globe.
The "Anti-Hero" singer, who was decked out in a glistening gold jumpsuit, stated that she has been motivated to create more new music as a result of the positive response it has received in recent years.
"I have the fans to thank essentially for my happiness," Swift said to the cheering audience in Los Angeles.
She continued, “I cannot express how unbelievable it is to me that I still do this and that you still care.”
The 32-year-old has produced more music in the past three years than she did in the previous ten. This includes four new albums and two re-recordings. Each of the singles from her most recent album, “Midnights,” debuted in the top 10 on the Billboard chart when it was released in October.
Swift, who accepted multiple awards on Sunday, did not address Ticketmaster’s technical difficulties in selling her upcoming tour, for which the company issued an apology to her late on Friday.
Swift also won the favourite pop album, a favourite country album, and a favourite video for her reimagining of “Red,” which was originally released in 2012. Due to a disagreement with her former record label, the singer has been remastering her older albums.
Swift beat out Beyoncé, Harry Styles, The Weeknd, Drake, Adele, and Bad Bunny, who all had eight nominations each, to win artist of the year. The Puerto Rican lyricist and performer won two prizes: fan favourite male Latin artist and fan favourite Latin album for “Un Verano Sin Ti.”
At the start of the AMAs, pop star Pink skated out on roller skates while singing and performing her upbeat song “Never Gonna Not Dance Again.” Later in the ceremony, she paid tribute to the late “Grease” singer Olivia Newton-John by singing “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”
The American Music Awards presented Lionel Richie, best known for “All Night Long” and other hits of the ’80s, with the Icon Award. The two artists duelled on pianos to play a variety of Richie tracks.
Dove Cameron, a one-time Disney Channel star whose pop single “Boyfriend” charted this year, was named best new artist.
Wayne Brady, the show’s host and resident comedian, rapped during his opening monologue. Referring to Will Smith’s infamous attack on Chris Rock at the Oscars, Brady joked, “Ain’t nobody getting slapped tonight.”
