Pakistan has made the decision to import wheat from Russia in order to combat inflation and a possible food security catastrophe.
The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) decided to buy 300,000 tonnes of wheat on Monday; this is the first state-level import agreement with Moscow since 2020.
Authorities had received a warning from the Pakistan Agriculture Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) regarding insufficient wheat inventories.
This year, Pakistan saw a 3.9% decrease in wheat production as a result of insufficient irrigation water and consecutive heatwaves that occurred weeks before harvest.
A few months later, flooding harmed PASSCO's wheat supplies.
In the past, a shortage in wheat output has resulted in political unrest and the depletion of Pakistan's foreign reserves.
