Court Orders INEC To Resume Voters Registration

On Tuesday, a Federal High Court in Abuja ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to resume Continuous Voters Registration until 90 days before the 2023 general elections.

In the judgment, Justice Inyang Ekwo also directed INEC to ensure that eligible Nigerians were not denied the opportunity to obtain a voter card for the upcoming election.

Justice Ekwo ruled that it was the electoral umpire's constitutional responsibility to make adequate provisions for the exercise in accordance with Nigerian laws.

"The plaintiffs' case succeeds on merit," the judge declared.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Anajat Salmat and three others sued INEC as the sole defendant in a case titled FHC/ABJ/CS/1343/2022.

The plaintiffs argued in the originating summons filed before the court that INEC cannot halt the CVR in violation of the constitution's stipulated provisions.

They asked the court to order the electoral umpire to resume the election in accordance with the country's laws..
