According to Janet Ekpenyong, director-general of the Cross River Primary Healthcare Development Agency, more than 500,000 residents in the area have already gotten their first dosage of the COVID-19 vaccination.
On Thursday in Calabar, Ms Ekpenyong made her disclosure.
She claims that the number represents the period from March 2021 to October 2022 during which vaccinations were administered and that the government's goal is to immunise at least 1.5 million individuals by the end of December.
The agency would reach the target by the first quarter of 2023, according to Ms Ekpenyong, if the target was not fulfilled because fewer Cross River residents chose to receive the vaccine than expected.
She encouraged the locals to get the immunisation at any primary healthcare facility nearby, stressing that it was secure and cost nothing.
“Between March 2021 and October 2022, 500,000 residents in Cross River have received the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine. We have to decentralise the whole process. We are vaccinating at health facilities and outreach sites and also moving from one place to the other,” Ms Ekpenyong explained.
She added, “We were able to achieve this with the support of key stakeholders, the media, and politicians, as well as traditional and religious leaders, among others.”
